BELLVER CASTLE
The first of our recommendations is a classic when we travel to the island of Mallorca. Located in the southwest of Palma, we find Bellver Castle, an early 14th-century construction with a peculiarity. It is a circular castle and although it is not the only castle in Europe with these characteristics, it seems to be the oldest known. From this beautiful Mallorcan Gothic-style castle we can discover the reason for its name. Bellver means “beautiful view”, something you will find out as soon as you climb the hill where it is located. From here we can see the entire Bay of Palma and the coastline in the foreground. In the opposite direction, we can see the Mallorcan Tramontana. It is undoubtedly a privileged place that is well worth a visit if you are on the island.

THE CHARTERHOUSE OF VALLDEMOSA
We are off to the Tramontana to discover one of the island’s emblematic constructions. Located in the town of Valldemosa, we find La Cartuja, a palace dating from the early 14th century, built by King James II for his son Sancho as a retreat due to his asthmatic illness. Inside there is a museum with different themes. From an old printing press to a collection of contemporary art. There is also a space dedicated to the Sierra de la Tramontana and an extensive outdoor garden full of beautiful flowers where it is a pleasure to walk around. Numerous personalities such as Chopin, Unamuno and Rubén Darío, among others, stayed here. It is undoubtedly another must on a cultural visit to the island of Mallorca.

GLASSBLOWING, AN ART FORM IN MALLORCA
One of the most deeply-rooted traditions among the people of Mallorca is glassblowing and its artisanal process. This craft, whose origins date back to the 2nd century BC, shows us part of the culture and traditions that we can find on the island, and fortunately there are several places where we can contemplate this art. We visited the Fabrica La Fiore and at the time it was possible to contemplate the manufacture of all kinds of objects free of charge.

MONASTERY OF LLUC
The Monastery or Sanctuary of LLuc is located in the Sierra de la Tramontana mountain range. It has belonged to the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts since 1891, by order of the Diocese of Mallorca. Inside there is a Renaissance-style church, a museum and a beautiful botanical garden.

The museum consists of 8 themed rooms dedicated to archaeology, treasures, Mallorcan alcove, sacred imagery, ceramics, art gallery, textile crafts and a room dedicated to Josep Coll Bardolet. The botanical garden was created in 1956 to house native and endemic plant species of the region.

THE FARM OF SPORLES
It was already known from Roman times, as were the Arabs during their period on the island from the 10th to the 13th century. Later the Cistercian monks founded a monastery for the order on the site. La Granja de Esporles is one of the Mallorcan jewels that you cannot miss if you are on the island.

La Granja de Esporles is nowadays a rustic and stately building that perfectly shows many cultural and traditional aspects of Mallorca. In the exterior area we find a wide expanse of gardens, natural fountains and patios where handicrafts were carried out. Inside the farmhouse there are several floors full of rooms where different trades are shown, such as the doctor’s room, the alchemist’s room, the looms and other underground rooms where milling and oil extraction were carried out.

The farmhouse kitchen still produces typical Mallorcan products such as fig bread, apricot jams, angel hair, fig and orange, fritters, cheese and typical herbal liqueurs with aniseed. There is also a restaurant which we did not try but which many say offers quality local dishes.

CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARÍA IN PALMA DE MALLORCA

Palma de Mallorca has an important historical and cultural heritage, but of all the buildings in the capital, its cathedral stands out, visible from practically anywhere you are in the city.

The Cathedral of Santa María de Palma is located next to the sea, surrounded by the Roman and Renaissance walls that once protected the city. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931 and has the largest known Gothic-style rose window. So much so that it is known as the “Eye of the Gothic”. Measuring 121 metres long by 55 metres wide, it houses numerous treasures inside, such as an imposing four-keyboard organ dating from 1477.

DEIÁ, A CHARMING VILLAGE
Mallorca has many charming villages. Among those in the Sierra de la Tramontana mountain range that have most caught our attention, we have chosen Deiá for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is its privileged location between the mountains and the sea. Its narrow, steep streets date back to the Middle Ages and the Muslim period. Its artistic and cultural heritage includes the 14th century Parish Church of Deiá, together with its museum and cemetery, and other private museums that may well arouse your interest.

One of them is the Es Clot Archaeological Museum, founded in 1962 by William Waldren. It is the venue for various international events related to the archaeology of the prehistoric period and houses numerous discoveries from sites found in the area.

Two other places of interest are the Yanikun Museum, a painter who lived here and collected his paintings, and the Foundation of Robert Graves, a writer who lived in Deiá from 1929 until his death, and whose house has been open to visitors since 2006.

PARISH CHURCH OF SANT BARTOMEU IN SOLLER

The church of Soller is the last of the architectural gems we present in this article, declared an “Asset of Cultural Interest” in 2003. Its modernist façade leaves no visitor indifferent. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century (around 1236) and has different stages where elements of medieval, Romanesque and Baroque origin are incorporated. The current appearance of the façade was designed by Joan Rubió i Bellver, a disciple of the master Gaudí, something that is evident when contemplating the front of the church and the Bank of Soller, located right next to it.
